The First Meeting
Why Was it So Special?
If I had to pick one thing, I’d have to say there was hope. I have a pretty high education in my field, and Sarah actually is extremely knowledgeable. She’s not a doctor, but she worked in an area that gave her tremendous medical knowledge as well. We’re both savvy. And, you know we were coming from a prognosis of “We will make you comfortable. We’ll give you a prescription to get marijuana spray. And, we have even greater painkillers. And it won’t be terrible.” So we were coming from an area with zero hope. And we sat down. And he was just confident. We could see we were dealing with a decent guy, a modest guy. Sometimes, some doctors can come across as so arrogant and such jerks. Sometimes they may be good. But this is someone who cares. He gives you all the time in the world. But the number one thing was that he was giving us hope. When after all the boxes were checked, here we were sitting with the doctor saying, “I have ideas. I have some ideas. There are things we can do. This is not game over. There are things that can be done.” So there was hope.
And sometimes you can meet snake oil salespeople too, who promise you the world. But we saw this wasn’t the case. We had spoken to various doctors. He came highly recommended that someone who really is a bit of a Maverick, and here we are. He was telling us, even within the medications that Sarah had taken (she had taken obviously a whole lot of different medicines) he had ideas even with the medicines, aside from a couple of new things that had come out. Within the medicine she had taken, he had ideas of combining things perhaps that would never have been done in the other hospital.
HE GAVE US HOPE.
We were dealing with an obviously extremely bright person. And at that point, we prayed to God that we were going to make the right move. But it was hope. I’d say it’s because he was confident. He listened. While the other doctors said, “sorry, we tried everything we could at this point. There’s nothing more that could be done,” that’s not Dr. Hirschfeld.
He takes everything in the arsenal and thinks outside the box and thinks about what he could do. it’s more than half a year later, and he delivered. Os there a guarantee? Absolutely not. Cancer is a horrible disease and no one can guarantee anything, but we saw markers that went from crazy high numbers to being cut down to literally down to like a third of what they were, maybe even cut down to a quarter of what they were again.
Now we’re dealing with a new marker battle again, because of the horrible aspect of cancer.
But… he delivered.
