Hirschfeld Oncology: Fighting Cancer Series
Stage 4 Colon Cancer
This is an interview about a woman named Sarah. We met with her husband to discuss Sarah’s battle against recurring colon cancer.
My wife, Sarah, was diagnosed with stage four, colon cancer in 2015. It’s been quite a battle between 2015 and now. Unfortunately, it came as a shock because there were no horrible symptoms going on. And when we got the news from a routine colonoscopy it was quite a shock. So the process started we went to a top hospital that was really excellent and a top colon oncologist in that top hospital who was a wonderful doctor. And we fought the good fight. There were two operations between 2015 and today, two extensive operations, and a whole lot of chemo treatments.
Sarah went through the various treatments, the chemo’s, surgeries, and reached the point that her bloods were great. And she was declared clean from cancer. It was just fabulous news. She beat it. And then a few months later, the marker shot up again. And we got the news that it had come back with a passion. Back to this top doctor at the top hospital and we tried everything. Again. There was more chemo, another operation, et cetera for about a year ago or so.

The Trouble with Big Hospitals
When you’re dealing with top hospitals, they’re great, but they do have to work within a protocol. And they can’t go out of the box, essentially. Of course, they can try various things. And certainly, being in a trial is sort of going out of the box. But if a trial doesn’t work then they basically put you out to pasture. And Dr. Hirschfeld is really out of the box. He’s not locked into protocol. He’s locked into taking his vast, tremendous knowledge and expertise of cancer, of oncology, and not being restricted or bound by limitations that other doctors place on themselves.
Besides the vast knowledge you see, speaking to Dr. Hirschfeld, we also saw that we were dealing with a warm kindhearted person who really cared. And for the first time in at least a month from when we were booted out of the trial until we met to him, we finally had some hope. Now cancer is a horrible disease. In no which way do I want to imply to anyone that after everyone else is given up, you go to Dr. Hirschfeld and you’ll be hitting home runs.
Dr. Hirschfeld can push the ticket as far as a ticket can go. He keeps up to date with everything and every latest development in cancer. And his brilliant mind takes that knowledge and moves the pieces around to come up with ideas in his arsenal to treat the cancer and to do everything humanly possible, to battle the cancer.
Sarah’s Results
When we got to Dr. Hirschfeld’s door and we said, we’re here, take care and do the best you could, her markers went down substantially. That’s good, markers going down. They went down substantially to a point where Dr. Hirschfeld said, ‘We’re up to a CT scan, let’s take a CT scan and see what’s happened with the cancer. Since he started the last CT scan we had was done at this top hospital. And it was very scary because cancer basically had spread to a lot of different places. It started off as colon cancer, but when it’s stage four, it spreads to other organs. So there had been quite a spread and it was really a very scary CT scan report to read at that time
We went for the CT scan and we went immediately to Dr. Hirschfeld’s office from there. And when we sat down by Dr. Hirschfeld, he had just received a phone call from the radiologist. Normally the radiologist just waits until he issues the report. A few days later. But he felt that he had to tell Dr. Hirschfeld that there was an amazing change and a lot of the cancer had disappeared.
And Dr. Hirschfeld wanted to relay this information to us.
Ours has been a titanic battle with cancer. We are blessed to be in God’s hands and to have found Dr. Hirschfeld.
